Each new SF State dancer brings to campus a spectrum of training, and the dancer’s perception of “beginning” or "advanced" may--or may not--match the rigors of the technical training at the university. The placement audition helps the Dance faculty meet you and make this assessment. The audition will cover material from our level II courses in Ballet, Jazz, and Modern Dance. Dress in appropriate attire for a technique class.
All new students must enroll in DANCE 170 and earn a grade of C or better in order to confirm major status. If you would like to take upper-level dance classes in your first semester, you must sign up for the placement audition.

- Q: I am a dance major. Can I enroll in Dance courses during Freshman Orientation if I have not attended my placement audition yet?
A: You can enroll in general education courses and dance academics, but you must attend the placement audition in order to receive permit numbers to enroll in dance technique courses.
- Q: What should I wear to the audition?
A: You should wear appropriate form fitting dance attire (no baggy clothing) to allow dance faculty to see your alignment. You may wear ballet slippers for the ballet portion of the audition and jazz shoes for the jazz portion of the audition. You need to be barefoot for the modern and improvisation portions of the audition.
- Q: What will the faculty be looking for during the placement audition?
A: Faculty are interested in your alignment, how you approach new material in class, and how you take correction. Faculty are not interested in how many “tricks” you can do or how high your extension is.
- Q: I have been dancing for 15+ years and was in the most advanced dance courses at my studio. How come I was placed in level 1 technique courses?
A:The dance faculty expect that most university dance students have had many years of dance training prior to enrolling at SFSU.
- Q: What is DANC 170 and do I have to enroll in it?
A: DANC 170 is an Integrated Technique course. It is a core requirement in the dance major and all majors and minors must complete the course with a grade of C or higher in order to progress in the major.
