Afro-Cuban Ensemble

Kevin Wong playing for the Afro-Cuban Jazz EnsembleLed by John Calloway, this instrumental and vocal ensemble is unique in its approach in that it organically creates its own new and exciting arrangements each semester. The mission of the ensemble is to expose the larger listening audience to the richness of Cuban music that has so influenced American music since the 19th century, and to perform other related Pan-African-American styles of music namely from South America and the Caribbean and jazz in a demonstration of the interconnectedness of African influences in the Americas.

Jen Dodsworth and Nicole Calhoun Chamber Music provides students the opportunity to develop their skills in a collaborative musical environment. Students are placed in a chamber group (usually 2-5 people) which receives weekly coaching throughout the semester by our Quartet-in-Residence the Alexander String Quartet, and the International Center for the Arts Young Professional String Quartet.

SFSU Chamber Singers

Chamber SingersSince their founding in 1998 the San Francisco State University Chamber Singers have earned a reputation for excellence in choral performance. They have been praised for their "supple choralism" and "wonderfully committed performances" of the a cappella repertiore ranging from Renaissance madrigals to works of contemporary composers. Their discography includes Sing Me to Heaven (2000), A Heart's Journey (2002), featuring choral music of Latin America, and In Paradisum (2005), which explores music by Central European and American Composers.

Alexander String QuartetThe Alexander String Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at San Francisco State University. In addition to teaching private lessons to most of our Undergraduate and Graduate string majors, the quartet also works closely with all students interested in Chamber music, coaching student ensembles through the Chamber Music Workshop and Chamber Forum classes.

Maestro GThe SFSU Orchestra is open to all students (majors and non-majors) by audition, and community members as well. Orchestra rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:10pm - 5:50pm in Room 153. Audition during the first week of each semester.

The Village Dancers

The Village Dancers

Village Dancers PerformanceThe Village Dancers was founded in 2000 by dance professor Albirda Rose. It is a community-service learning program, designed to help low-income children work through their challenges and harness their personal power through movement, singing and dance performance. Students from SF State use dance as a medium to teach discipline, leadership, inter-cultural communication, and socialization skills to children ages 8-16.
