Information for Current Dance Students

What to expect from the Dance Program at SFSU:

The curriculum for the B.A. program in Dance has a unique design which provides an in-depth study of both practical and theoretical aspects of Dance. This will prepare a student for the K-12 credential program, graduate programs, performance and choreographic opportunities, cultural and ethnological dance research, and community teaching. A Dance major must complete the 23-unit core and have electives approved by an adviser. Students can specialize in: performance/choreography, which offers a variety of dance techniques, composition, history, aesthetics, music, production, movement science, injury prevention/treatment, and principles of theatrical production management; dance education, which adds proficiency in pedagogy and preparation for a credential program; or dance ethnology, which is designed to provide students with an understanding of research methodology and dance in cultural context.
The dance program also offers a subject matter course of study which is a five-year program of study which meets the California Physical Education Standards through courses in the Departments of Dance and Kinesiology. Upon completion, a student may apply for the Teacher Credential program in the College of Education. After completion of both programs, a student will be eligible to teach physical education and dance in the public schools. An adviser is available in the Department of Dance to discuss specific requirements.

The program also provides opportunities for student performances through the University Dance Company, the World Cultures Dance Concert and the production management course.
