Music History and Literature
Music
History is more than just old music! At the School of Music and Dance
at SFSU, your history and literature studies will be broad enough
to demonstrate the enormous range of musical art and flexible enough
to
focus on areas of your own particular interests. In addition to traditional
history classes, literature seminars, and ethnomusicology studies, you
can opt for classes focusing on music from the Pacific Basin, Latin
America, the Middle East, and North and Southeast Asia. If youre interested
in music of the twentieth century, youll find special classes on
Minimalism, American Iconoclasts, and those that focus on particular composers,
such as Stravinsky or Bartok. We also offer a number of classes on the
importance of popular music in the twentieth century: Survey of Jazz,
The Roots of Rock, Rock Since 1965, and The Beatles. This is a music history
degree thats ready for the twenty-first century.
Jazz & World Music Studies
This Bachelor of Arts degree combines ensemble
performance and instrumental or vocal jazz studies with a broad music
and liberal arts curriculum.
Techniques learned in improvisation, jazz harmony, and jazz composition
classes complement performances in a wide variety of ensembles. If
youre
interested in world music, our program is flexible enough to let you
focus on a particular region or culture with performance opportunities
in the
Balinese Gamelan and Creative World ensembles. Classes in dance ethnology
(see the minor in World Music and Dance) and in the college of Ethnic
Studies allow you to explore the depth and breadth of music in its
cultural
context.
Electronic Music
At the center of this Bachelor of Arts degree are
classes that survey electronic music, teach computer music skills,
and give you hands-on work
in our electronic music laboratory and MIDI studio. Pieces created
in those classes are presented at on-campus concerts. Studying an
instrument
or voice and performing in vocal or instrumental ensembles broadens
your musical scope, while theory, musicianship, and history
classes add depth
of understanding.
Classical Music
The Bachelor of Arts in classical music combines traditional instrumental
or vocal lessons with introductory to advanced levels of important skills
and learned in ear-training, music theory and orchestration classes. A
wide range of music history seminars enable you to focus on areas of your
own interest, and a choice of choruses and instrumental ensembles give
you a chance to collaborate with your colleagues. In addition to classical
ensembles, an extensive array of jazz and world music classes and ensembles
are also open to you.
