Music Scholarships for 2008-09

Each year, the SFSU School of Music and Dance awards scholarships to talented musicians. There are a variety of scholarships offered for performers, composers, educators, and researchers. All scholarships are competitive and are awarded based upon both academic and musical performance. Scholarship applications [pdf] are accepted from February through April each year.

Scholarship Auditions for the 2008/09 academic year will take place in Spring 2008 (see audition schedule). Scholarships will be offered to outstanding students entering (or continuing) in Fall 2008.

JOHN HANDY Music Scholarship for Jazz Studies

John Handy, a distinguished alumnus wants to invest in the future of Jazz and improvisational music at SF State by providing scholarships to deserving students in Jazz Studies. John has been joined by friends and family members to create the JOHN HANDY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR JAZZ STUDIES as part of his 75th birthday celebration in 2008.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing a career in jazz performance and/or jazz composition. Eligibility: Full or part-time graduate or undergraduate students with at least a 2.5 GPA may apply for the scholarship. An audition is required. Awards are based on merit.

PAUL PONE Forgivable Loan Scholarships

The Pone Forgivable Loan/Scholarship is generously endowed in memory of alumnus Paul M. Pone. The central purpose of this award is to benefit the educational endeavors of music students at SFSU. The Pone is an award that begins as a loan and, upon graduation, becomes a scholarship. Each semester, recipients agree to pay back their award, then upon graduation from SFSU, all loans are forgiven. Awards are made in amounts equivalent to 25% to 100% of in-state tuition, and in exceptional cases may exceed in-state tuition. Provided the student remains eligible, Pone Forgivable Loan Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters for undergraduates entering as freshmen, six semesters for undergraduate transfer students, and four semesters for graduate students. EDWARD NAGEL Scholarships

Nagel Scholarships are individual scholarships given in amounts equivalent to and beyond in-state tuition. Provided the student remains eligible, Nagel Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters for undergraduates entering as freshmen, six semesters for undergraduate transfer students, and four semesters for graduate students.

BIELAWA Student Composer in Residence Award

For continuing graduate or undergraduate composers. Each fall, a single composer is commissioned to compose a work for a specified chamber ensemble with whom they collaborate. For eligibility, further details, and the application, go to Bielawa Composer in Residence.

UNIVERSITY-WIDE Scholarships

San Francisco State University has a wide variety of additional scholarships available. Receiving a Music Department scholarship does not prevent you from applying forother funds that may be available through the university.
