Bachelor of Arts in Dance

Bachelor of Arts in Dance

SF State offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance, with emphases in either Performance & Choreography or Musical Theater. Technique classes are chosen from among Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and a variety of ethnic dance options. A minimum of 45 units in dance are required for the major. A placement audition is required, but it is only for the purpose of starting you out in the correct level classes - it will not affect your acceptance into the program.

The BA in Music is a liberal arts degree with music as the major area of study. It requires about 50 units of music classes. The BA has emphasis areas in Classical Music, Jazz/World Music studies, and Electronic Music. An audition is required for admittance into the BA in Music.

The BM degree is a rigorous music curriculum similar to a conservatory program. With 72-73 credits in the music department, the Bachelor of Music emphases include Classical Performance, Composition, Jazz, History & Literature, and Music Education (BME). An audition is required for admittance into the Bachelor of Music program.

Master of Arts in Music

The Master of Arts in Music program is for students interested in advanced Composition studies, History and Literature, or Music Education. Highly specialized coursework provides an intensive focus on the student’s particular area of specialization

Master of Music

Master of Music

We bring together advanced students and professional faculty in a high-level, collaborative environment. The program is highly selective and deliberately limited to a small number of students—resulting in a student-teacher ratio averaging 2:1. Private studio instruction is at the center of the performance and composition degrees, while seminars and hand-on experiences are the focus of degrees in music education and music history.

Minor in Dance

The Minor in Dance consists of 24 units in the Dance department. A placement audition is required, but it is only for the purpose of starting you out in the correct level classes - it will not affect your acceptance into the program.

Minor in Music

The Music department also offers a Minor in Music, requiring 21 units in the music department. The music minor is designed to lay the groundwork for a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of music. No audition required.

Minor in World Music and Dance

Minor in World Music and Dance

The School of Music and Dance offers an interdisciplinary minor in World Music and Dance. The minor requires a minimum of 24 units, incorporating classes from Music, Dance, Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, Art... This program is for students interested in developing a critical awareness of and global perspective for the rich cultural aspects of music, dance, and aural tradition. No audition is required.
